On the latest episode of Bits & Banks, I sat down with Melanie Draheim, CMO of Fox Communities Credit Union, for a thoughtful conversation on member relationships, marketing, community engagement, and what it takes to stay relevant while competing with best-in-class!

Melanie came into credit union marketing with fresh eyes and a stark observation: pull marketing from 50 credit unions and stick it on a board. You'll struggle to tell them apart.

Same rates. Same colors. Same "great service." Without differentiation, CUs risk creating more and more of the same.

So what actually breaks through?

Differentiation comes from understanding people. As technology becomes more accessible across the industry, competitive advantage increasingly comes from understanding members, communities, and local needs better than anyone else.

Personalization ≠ surveillance. Knowing a member visited Home Depot four times in a week is not a reason to send them a HELOC push notification. But knowing it's spring in Wisconsin, and targeting homeowners with a timely offer? That's helpful. Same data, completely different feeling.

Great experiences are built end-to-end. A personalized offer creates interest. What follows determines whether a member converts, disengages, or deepens their relationship. Marketing, underwriting, decisioning, pricing, funding, and servicing all shape that experience. The institutions pulling ahead are reducing friction across the entire journey and creating a seamless path from intent to outcome.

Credit unions that haven't built real loyalty now will watch those deposits walk out the door.

Melanie is one of the sharpest marketers I've had on the pod. Give it a listen.
